Kempinski Hotels
On March 31, Kempinski Hotels hosted a career day at the Kempinski Hotel Beijing Lufthansa Centre, where managers were present to give detailed insights on one of the most dynamic and people-oriented industries there is. In “speed dating” style, candidates got to know the general managers of Europe’s oldest and most established luxury hotel group. Various presentations throughout the day gave participants the opportunity to learn more about the company as well as the working conditions in the regions Kempinski hotels can be found.
Kempinski operates 10 hotels in China and the group has signed agreements to build a dozen more. Kempinski plans to have opened 30 hotels in China by 2015.
Approximately 500 ambitious and talented hotel management school graduates, highly motivated young professionals as well as enthusiastic newcomers are expected to attend for a chance to kick start their careers in the luxury hospitality business.
However, unlike career or recruitment days with most companies, finding new talent from outside the company is not the major focus. Internal candidates are the stars of the show. Kempinski has invited 75 young employees from its hotels in China to Beijing, where they will have the unique opportunity to meet the general managers and find their next opportunity with Kempinski.
Michael Henssler, Regional President China, said, “We understand that people have choices. However, we would like to ensure that these choices are from within Kempinski. The hotel industry in China is expanding rapidly and the war for talent is getting more and more challenging. It is our job as an employer to ensure that our top people are given the priority in regards to promotion and development.”
“Our aim is to double our portfolio by 2015,” said Reto Wittwer, President and CEO of Kempinski Hotels. “Finding new talent, which will push us further in the future, is and will continue to be our utmost priority. We are looking for candidates who are interested in different cultures, speak various languages and are looking for a bit of an adventure abroad.”
Currently, Kempinski operates 72 properties, including landmarks such as Hotel Adlon Kempinski in Berlin, Emirates Palace in Abu Dhabi, Ciragan Palace Kempinski in Istanbul and Hotel Baltschug Kempinski in Moscow. But there are also outstanding properties in more undiscovered destinations, such as Mongolia or the High Tatras Mountains in Slovakia, exotic corners of the world like Ghana and the Seychelles. Kempinski is pres- ent in 31 countries worldwide, with new openings in Western and Eastern Europe, the Middle East and Africa as well as China. “If eagerness and talent is combined with a passion for luxury hospitality and a hint of pioneer spirit, chances to have a future with Kempinski are bright,” concluded Wittwer. As attractive and diverse as its portfolio are the opportunities for entry level positions. With threeto six-month traineeships complementing college and university courses and six- to 18-month tailor-made management traineeships after graduation, the sky is the limit for young graduates who wish to join Kempinski.
“We constantly work on new training modules and find new ways of making Kempinski even more attractive to students and graduates,” said Henrike Gosemann, Vice President of Talent Development. “Young talented people have especially good opportunities to establish themselves within the company and to plan and progress their careers with Kempinski. With some flexibility and interest in new cultures, careers can move forward rather quickly.”
The proof is seen everywhere—many of Kempinski’s top managers have started their careers at entry level and worked their way up within the company.
