Introduction In order to meet the expected requirements of the U.S. Department of Defense in the 1990s, the technology of military microwave systems is making great strides. The rapid advances in system technology require the provision of microwave components that are larger, cheaper and more performant than in the past. These technically demanding, highly integrated microwave components pose a significant challenge to component manufacturers who must meet customer needs at the required production speeds while continuing to make profits. This article discusses the types and characteristics of the new military microwave system, and studies the impact of component development trends. In the microwave component industry, making money is not easy. To illustrate the reason, this article describes the price model. The paper also evaluates the role of monolithic microwave integrated circuit (MMIC) technology in controlling the price of components and also examines the importance of careful consideration of test scenarios. This article discusses the key issue is how to design a good economy, suitable for mass production of microwave components.
