This article reports the role of zinc-pretreated male Sprague-Dawley rats in reducing lethality and hepatotoxicity of cadmium. Rats were pretreated with saline (2 ml / kg) or zinc (12 mg Zn / kg) 48 and 24 hours prior to the administration of cadmium followed by IV lethal dose of cadmium 4.0 mg Cd / kg or non-lethal dose of cadmium 3.5 mgcd / kg (7μCi ~ (109) Cd / mgCd) were used to observe the lethality of animals, cadmium distribution in major organs, enzyme activity in plasma and histomorphology. Results Rats in the saline-cadmium group (4.0 mg Cd / kg) all died between 10 and 20 hours after cadmium exposure, while animals in the zinc-cadmium (4.0 mg Cd / kg) group did not die.
