INTRODUCTION Canada annually harvests 9 million tonnes of wood to meet papermaking and other needs. At present, the status of chemical pesticides, herbicides, fungicides and chemical fertilizers is becoming increasingly important in Canadian forestry operations. However, with the advent of R. Carson’s Silent Spring in the past decade, the public is alarmed at the environmental damage posed by large-scale chemical control (Translator’s Note: Silent Spring is published in In the early 1960s, we mainly talked about the dangers of chemical prevention and control to the human environment and delineated a horrible picture that caused great shock abroad. The components of the forest environment are air, water, soil, flora and fauna. This article focuses on the effects of large-scale chemical control of Choristoneura fumiferana in eastern Canada.
