The new industrial cities, represented by Manchester, Birmingham and Leeds, show distinctive features in terms of the spatial structure: with the advent of new industrial buildings, land functions are differentiated; various types of buildings intersect with each other and urban layout is disrupted; and new social strata are separated form. This feature of spatial structure has made the issue of “urban disease” particularly problematic in industrial cities. In the modern urban planning movement that emerged in the middle of the 19th century in the United Kingdom, industrial cities actively carried out planning and practice, the space structure was properly reorganized, the “urban disease” was alleviated, and the city’s appearance was significantly improved.
