Objective To investigate the expression of microvessel density (MVD) and vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) in hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) and its relationship with the histopathology and natural history. Methods Immunohistochemistry was used to detect the expression of MVD and VEGF in 63 cases of hepatocellular carcinoma tissues, adjacent tissues and 20 cases of non-cancerous liver tissues. Results The MVD in hepatocellular carcinoma was significantly higher than that in adjacent non-cancerous and non-cancerous tissues (P <0.0500). The survival of patients with low MVD was significantly longer than that of high MVD (P <0.05). There was no significant correlation between the expression of VEGF and the degree of differentiation P = 0.1393), and had a correlation with MVD and prognosis (P = 0.0002, 0.0039, respectively). Conclusion VEGF is involved in the angiogenesis of hepatocellular carcinoma. MVD and VEGF are associated with the development of hepatocellular carcinoma and its natural history.
