After returning from France in the 1950s, Wu Guanzhong was a true painter of oil painting. Since the mid-1970s, Wu Guanzhong moved back and forth between painting and ink painting, and his identity as an oil painter began to blur. By the 1980s, he concentrated most of his energy on ink painting and achieved remarkable success. In 1989, Wu Guanzhong’s an ink painting “Site of Gaochang” in Hong Kong Sotheby’s auction, creating the highest price of Chinese living painters. Although the value of the commodity is not equal to the artistic value, from the perspective of the development of Chinese painting, the path of Wu Guanzhong’s artistic exploration provides us with a valuable research topic. His success is an accidental necessity and an accidental necessity.
