This article analyzes whether the introduction of modern media technologies into Chinese urban hospitals can alter the communication among health professionals and between doctors and patients. In July and August 2011, we interviewed doctors, nurses, information center supervisors and technicians in Beijing Tiantan Hospital. The first conclusion shows that hospital staff welcome the implementation of EMR as it streamlines workflow and improves regulation of the quality of care. However, as far as the patient’s direct communication was concerned, EMR had no effect on the patient’s health literacy and health behaviors, according to the respondents. This inquiring study is embedded in a theoretical framework that debates between contemporary colleges about the challenges that Chinese health care systems still have to face and on the basis of whether EMR can help Chinese medical institutions, That is, the reform of hospital management is a question. Whether EMR has the potential to solve the current problem of China in the field of information exchange between different hospitals (patient data interchange), scientific fields, and ethics in clinical practice (mistrust between doctors and patients).
