When Stanley Prusiner first encountered the case, he was a resident in the neurology department at the University of California, San Francisco. The patient is a woman, more than 50 years old, has always been healthy and energetic. Her initial signs of discomfort came when the key was inserted into the ignition of a car and she had done it well thousands of times. She began to misplace the key, it seems that coordination disorders. Within a few months, she was speechless, paralyzed, and could not remember her name. This is a rare, incurable Creutz-feldt-Jakob disease that attacks the nervous system. Less than six months after the first symptoms, the woman died.
