The novel “I am the earth” written by the American Jewish writer Cheney Portok is the only American Korean war novel that describes the life of Korean refugees during wartime. Although this novel depicts the suffering of the Korean people in a more realistic way, it still has not got rid of the mold that the West has shaped the “exotic image” of the East. On the one hand, the author puts the refugees in the turmoil of South Korean flight and, on the other hand, constructs them into “idealized and demonized” “exotic images” through the cultural context of the West. These “exotic images ” not only reflect the author’s self-infatuation with the religious culture of the nation, but also embody the author’s ideological formula of “the best in the West”.
