In October 1988, as a member of China’s press and publication delegation, we held talks with the “Volunteer Association of All-Soviet Books Enthusiasts” (referred to as “Association of Book Lovers”) during their visit to the Soviet Union. The association, which has been in existence for 28 years, has a great influence on the publishing industry and readership in the Soviet Union, with 19 million members and dozens of other members. The organization was initially fostered by the Propaganda Department of the Central Committee of the CPSU. The main source of income comes from 21 subordinate enterprises, including cattle production plants for the production of frames, bookmarks, bookshelves and miniature books, as well as the operation of binding design, book design and advertising.
