According to Henry Lynch, MD, of the University of Creston, Omaha, USA, and colleagues, the family genetic and biochemical cues in ovarian cancer may eventually lead to the recommendation for prophylactic bilateral oophorectomy in some high-risk women. After careful analysis of three families with four generations of health history, women with ovarian cancer were found to share a common genetic abnormality called in vitro extradiploidy. Lynch said at the 2nd International Conference on Tumor Markers that this means that when skin cells are cultured, there are more chromosomes in the mid-cell division than the normal 46-chromosomal group. For example, twin sisters in one family develop eggs.
