Objective To investigate the levels of nerve growth factor (NGF) in serum and follicular fluid in patients with polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) and its effect on the outcome of pregnancy. Methods Thirty-six PCOS patients (PCOS group) underwent in vitro fertilization-embryo transfer (IVF-ET) from January 2013 to January 2015 were enrolled in this study. Thirty patients (control group) with non-PCOS who underwent IVF- The levels of NGF, serum testosterone (T), estradiol (E2), follicle stimulating hormone (FSH) and luteinizing hormone (LH) in serum and follicular fluid on the day of injection of human chorionic gonadotropin (HCG) ) Levels were compared between the two groups of IVF-ET results and PCOS group of pregnant and non-pregnant patients serum NGF levels. Results On the day of HCG injection, the levels of NGF in serum and follicular fluid in PCOS group were significantly higher than those in control group (all P <0.01). The levels of serum E2 and LH in PCOS group were significantly higher than those in control group (P < <0.05). There was no significant difference in serum T and FSH levels between PCOS group and control group (all P> 0.05). The pregnancy rate in PCOS group was 44.44% lower than that in control group (70.00%), the difference was statistically significant (P <0.05). In PCOS group, the serum and follicular fluid NGF levels in patients with pregnancy were significantly lower than those in non-pregnant group , The difference was statistically significant (P <0.05). Conclusions NGF in serum and follicular fluid of patients with PCOS is higher than that in non-PCOS patients. Increasing of NGF level may affect the success of pregnancy in patients with PCOS.
