自动作业的目的要求，应符合每一课文总的目的要求。自动作业的作用，一般来讲是巩固直接教学新知识的，但在新课开始前，布置儿童观察书中插图、阅读课文的某一部分，或复习旧课导入新课，这些预习性的作业也是必要的。一般的讲，自动作业的次数在中低年级每节课每级以二次为宜，这样时间短、次数多，容易分散难点，好使学生轻松愉快的接受新知识。另一方面，也应看教学任务的具体情况，不能因此打乱课文的系统性。
