Starting in mid-1986, a joint venture between Siemens AG and the Corning Glass Company of the United States (Siecor, Neustadt / Coburg) will supply optical fiber cables to cable manufacturers in Germany. The first step of expansion will cost about 85 million marks and produce about 80,000 kilometers of fiber optic fiber each year. After the expansion, the annual output may exceed 200,000 kilometers. At first there were 50 workers and there will be 150 workers in the future who will manufacture optical fibers. In this high-tech factory, optical fibers are produced in clean rooms, producing not only tapered fibers but also specialty single-mode fibers. The optical fiber was manufactured according to the OVD method (external vapor deposition method) invented by Corning Incorporated. By the end of 1985, Corning had reached the production capacity of one million kilometers of fiber optic fiber, all of which were produced using this technology.
