Since 1974, the authors used 35 free flaps to repair large areas of the limbs, chest, breast and head and neck. Twenty-five flaps (71%) were successful, four (11%) partially successful and six (17%) failing. (A partially successful flap means that the desired effect has been achieved, but additional minor surgery is still required - for example, transplanted skin graft). In all cases, not all flaps survived and all blood vessels were unobstructed, prompting the authors to conduct an in-depth review of the relationship between flap survival and vascular occlusion time.
