The Qing was a dynasty (1644-1911 ) in Chinese history founded by the Manchus . The ethnic integration of the Han Chinese and the Manchu promoted contact and borrowing between their two languages , and as a result , many ethnic words appeared in the literary texts .The Kan-gxichao hanwen zhupi zouzhe huibian ( or A Collec-tion of Memorials with Comments in Red Chinese Characters during the Kangxi Period) is an impor-tant literary source for the study of the Kangxi peri-od (1662-1722 ) , and even for the entire history of the Qing dynasty . We select several ethnic words, including shaolu/mulan (哨鹿/木兰), angbang (昂邦) , dieba (碟巴/吧) , and kanbu (堪布) , to give some additional annotations on their meanings , using the available large dictiona-ries as references .In addition to searching the lit-erature related to the Qing history , we will also take novels and local histories of the time into con-sideration . This research will not only provide some references to scholars from various disciplines while using this literature , but will also provide some additional information which we lack due to the deficiency of large -scale reference books .In the following paragraphs , we would like to give a brief interpretation of the four ethnic words men-tioned above: 1.shaolu/mulan (哨鹿/木兰) The whistle sound which imitated the voice of the deer and which was made by people while hun-ting was called shaolu ( whistle -deer ) in Chi-nese, and mulan in the Manchu language .The custom of“shaolu” whistling was very popular dur-ing the Qing dynasty .However the Qing dynasty was not the beginning of this practice .In fact, asearly as the Liao Dynasty (907 -1125 A.D.), historical texts recorded that the Jurchen practiced the shaolu custom. The custom of shaolu could have originated from trapping wild deer , and later became an insti-tution with a certain scale in the Qing dynasty .“mulan qiumi” which began in the 20th year of the Kangxi period ( 1682 ) became an important na-tional ceremony in the Qing dynasty .The practice of shaolu was supposed to not only improve the quality of the baqi ( the Eight -banner ) officers and soldiers , but also had a very significant politi-cal meaning.“Through the activity of ‘mulan qi-umi’, ( we could) pacify and unite the various tribes of inner and outer Mongolia , and turn them into an important political pillar for maintaining a unified multi -nationality nation .” The explana-tions of shaolu and mulan in hanyu dacidian and zhongguo lishi dacidian ( The Great Chinese Dic-tionary and The Great Dictionary of Chinese History [ The Qing Volume] ) are basically the same , and there are no further explanations to the activity of“shaolu ” or other words which were related to shaolu. In this article , we provide some additional commentaries on them through examining related literature. 2.angbang (昂邦) “Angbang” (昂邦) , also known as “an-ban” ( 按班) , is the transliteration of a Manchu word. Its original meaning is “big”; and, later it was used to mean “minister”.The Great Chinese Dictionary only notes the word “anban” ( 按班) , and explains this word as:, “Manchu language , meaning minister , also written as angbang (昂邦) .” There is no other documentary evidence;there are only two examples , which moreover did not include angbang (昂邦) .The Great Dictiona-ry of Chinese History included neither “angbang”(昂邦) nor “anban” ( 按班) , but did include the expression “angbang zhangjing” (昂邦章京) .The zhongguo lidai guanzhi dacidian ( The Great Dictionary of Official Institution of Various Dynasties in Chinese History ) explains that “ang-bang” (昂邦) is a Manchu word , and means minister”.The qingshi manyu cidian ( The Qing-History Manchu Language Dictionary ) explains that “anban” ( 按班) is “ also known as ‘ang-bang’ (昂邦), and that it is pronounced in Man-chu language as ‘amban [ ampan] ’ .It further ex-plains that “ ‘amban’ (按班) means minister or the big one , and that the Chinese meaning is min-ister , or high-ranking official .” After checking the Qing dynasty literature , we know that the original meaning of “angbang” (昂邦) is “big”, and that afterwards it was used to refer to “minister” or“leader”.Hence, these two meanings seem to come from same source .Thus, it seems that it is reasonable to use the explanation as“ minister, or the big one” in Manchu language , and“minister” in the Chinese language in Qingshi manyu cidian. This meaning actually had appeared even earlier.According to guisi cungao ( The Re-cords in the Kuisi Year [Vol.3]) by Yu Zhexie,“ ‘Anban’ (按班) refers to ‘leader’”. 3.dieba (碟巴/吧) and kanbu (堪布) Both dieba (碟巴/吧) , and kanbu (堪布) were the titles of local official in Tibet .They were high-ranking attendants of the Dalai and Panchen Lamas, and both held the military power .The offi-cial who managed the affairs of the Lama was called as “kanbu”, and the one who managed the affairs of the local people was called as “dieba”.“Kanbu”, in the hanyu dacidian, is explained as“a transliteration of a Tibetan word; the title of monk officer in the former Tibetan local govern-ment; the high -ranking attendants of Dalai and Panchen;and having great power .” There were re-cords about the official posts of “dieba” (碟巴/吧) and“kanbu” (堪布) in related documents . There were also very clear and strict rules in selecting officials in Tibet .The word “dieba” (碟巴/吧) was not included in the hanyu dacidian, qingshi manyu cidian, zhongguo lishi dacidian and other related dictionaries, therefore, it should be added .
