Oxidation type corrosion inhibitors are effective in reducing the rate of corrosion of activated-passivated metals because they allow the metal to self-passivate. This article describes the electrochemical kinetics of this system, which further elucidates the general rules governing the role of oxidative corrosion inhibitors and their limitations. I. Introduction Oxidation type corrosion inhibitor can greatly reduce the corrosion rate, the actual can generally reduce a thousand times or more. However, this feature is also their main limitation. Small changes in corrosion inhibitor concentration will likely result in a sharp increase in corrosion rate. Therefore, careful consideration needs to be given to the safe use of such corrosion inhibitors. This paper reviews the corrosion inhibition mechanism, application and limitations of oxidative corrosion inhibitors.
