In recent years, the antique market in Beijing’s Panjiayuan district has seen booming business. Chinese and foreigners alike flock there on weekends in search of all sorts of second-hand treasures. On a recent Saturday morning, a friend of mine invited me to Panjiayuan. Just inside the entrance to the market there are dozens and dozens of vendors’ stalls filled with an endless variety of goods, including paintings and calligraphy, books, jewelry, furniture, and antiques, as well as many curiosities.
