Small-conductance calcium-activated potassium channels, also known as SK channels, are widely expressed in neurons of different subtypes and play an important role in regulating synaptic plasticity, learning and memory, and dopaminergic neurotransmission. This article focuses on the role of SK channels in regulating dopaminergic neurons in the substantia nigra and their controversial role in the pathogenesis of Parkinson’s disease and discusses whether the regulation of SK channels may be a novel approach to treat Parkinson’s disease .
