Carburized alloy steel gears receive the maximum load capacity after proper heat treatment. For high-quality carburizing, the depth of the layer, the microstructure of the layer and the surface hardness must be controlled very carefully. The depth of penetration of carbon into the teeth is a function of the atmosphere’s carbon potential, temperature, time and composition of the steel. The first of many questions about the production of parts for carburizing is how and where to measure the depth of the layer?
