Robert H. Bates is a famous American expert on African studies. He is a professor of politics at Harvard University and a researcher at the Institute of International Development at Harvard University. Bates has long enjoyed a reputation in international academic circles for his long-term study on violence and state failure in Africa. In 2008, when he published a new book, “When Things Fell Apart: State Failure in Late-Century Africa, Cambridge University Press,” aroused great repercussions in academia. Given this book Great academic value and practical significance, this article is devoted to introducing and commenting on it to readers.
