Sweeteners are a sweetening substance that has been around for nearly a century and is widely consumed by those who need to control energy such as diabetes and overweight. It is also used in foods such as sweetened drinks and some cosmetics (such as toothpaste, mouthwash, etc.) and medicines (such as pediatric medicines). About 1950, saccharin was considered harmless to the human body. The earliest chronic toxicity study conducted in rats was inconclusive. In 1955, the US Food Protection Commission determined that “the maximum allowable level of saccharin in human diet should be at least 1.0 g per day.”
