荧幕动画的诞生要比真人电影更早,摄影术、放映术和“视觉暂留原理”成为动画诞生的三大前提条件。早在计算机出现以前,角色动画就已经很完善了。只是那时的角色动画使用其他的媒体。开始时,三维动画指的是木偶动画和静止摄影术,毕竟这些动画物体都是三维的。之后,迪士尼于1920年至1930年发展并完善了PGI动画,这成为了现代动画的分水岭。PGI是Pencil Generated Imagery的缩写。顾名思义,这种动画是由铅笔勾勒而成。
