《推销员之死》一剧追溯了草根人物威利·洛曼生前24小时的故事。63岁的威利作为一名推销员毕生辛勤劳作,本想实现自己的美国梦却最终不得不以悲惨自杀而了解余生。作为一部经典巨作,其强悍的情感震撼力使之影响西洋戏剧界半个多世纪。剧中的悲剧主角威利虽孜孜不懈幻想通过一己之力美梦成真,殊不知虚幻的美国梦带给他的无非是海市蜃楼般的结局。走到绝望边缘的威利至死未能彻底醒悟,通过自杀换取保险赔偿金来助子完成那虚幻的“美国梦”。本文旨在通过对文本的细读来重新审视威利的草根梦想,揭示他的悲剧命运根源。
The Death of a Salesman traces the 24-hour story of grassroots Willie Lohman during his lifetime. 63-year-old Willie worked hard as a salesman all his life, and wanted to realize his own American dream but eventually had to learn the rest of his life with tragic suicide. As a classic masterpiece, its powerful emotional shock so that the Western drama more than half a century. Willie, the tragedy in the play, diligently pursues his dreams through his own power. Everyone knows that an illusory American dream brings him nothing but a mirage. Willy’s death to the verge of despair failed to completely re-awaken, fulfilling the illusory “American dream ” by suicide in return for insurance compensation. The purpose of this paper is to re-examine Willie’s grassroots dreams through a careful reading of the text to reveal the root causes of his tragedies.
