电压表、电流表在工作时,其内阻、电流、电压遵循欧姆定律.电流表可以显示流过自身的电流,电流表测电流时串联到被测电路中,利用了串联电路的特点;电压表可以显示自身两端的电压,电压表测电压时并联到被测电路的两端,利用了并联电路的特点.在内阻已知的情况下,电压表可以测电流,电流表可以测电压.电压表和电流表都具有电阻、电压表、电流表三种性质,这可称为电表的共性.
