Three years ago, MEC President Mitchell Rutger was keen to foresee a revolution in computer storage technology. EMC is now a loyal customer: Federal Express Co. and Visa International have been unable to keep important company information confidential. Rutger therefore dreamed of an “open” storage system that could store separate data for the main computer and networked computers, and successfully solved the headaches for the two companies. When Rutger boldly predicted that EMC would sell 200 million U.S. dollars worth of such technology products in 1995, even the company’s salesmen considered it as crazy.
