Carbon is the most important element in cast iron. Therefore, the carbon needs to be constantly monitored during the casting process. Sampling process is critical, too slow condensation will produce graphite inclusions. However, the Spark Direct Reading Spectrometer requires a completely graphite-free sample to obtain accurate measurements. This paper studies and discusses the reasons for such requirements and elaborates on a principle and feasibility of a new carbon determination method. This method improves the accuracy of determining the carbon content of cast iron samples that do not meet the best standards and can indicate whether the sampling process is appropriate.
