“Go to Tibet!” seems to be a new motto for “gold diggers”. The opening of Qinghai-Tibet Railway should have been good news to Tibet. But with thousands of opportunities within reach, Tibet doesn’t appear ready to greet them. Despite the convenience brought by the new railway, few Tibetan companies have calculated exactly how much cost was saved. This is because the cut in cost doesn’t mean much to a local company’s decisions. For those companies which root in the plateau over 3,000 meters above the sea level, they are not short of Oxygen, but a business atmosphere indispensable to the survival of modern enterprises. The long-term lack of market economy and business environment accounts for the low business power of nearly all the Tibetan companies. For local companies, the business wave along the Qinghai-Tibet Railway has brought them two choices - they may either become stronger in a much bigger business stage or be defeated in the billow and robbed of the tranquil life in the past. This is somewhat like a lake suddenly connected to the sea. The ecosystem in the lake may well be reshuffled. For Tibetan companies which have long been far from fierce businesscompetitions, the sudden arrival of opportunities is more like a severe challenge. As the siren blares down the railroad, the locomotive brings in business concepts, market ideas and operational measures from all over the country. Tibetan companies have no time to get themselves ready for such changes, which might either boost new development or hollow out all their treasure. Such is the most obvious influence of the Qinghai-TibetRailway on the business ecosystem in Tibet.
