New carbon-based coatings have been developed for cutting light metals (such as aluminum). Such coatings can be used directly on the tool or as a top layer on another hardcoat. Cutting tests show that such coatings have good cutting properties for materials that adhere easily to the tool, such as aluminum alloys, because the so-called BUE is significantly reduced. The result is extended tool life and smooth workpiece surfaces after cutting. Especially in dry cutting and deep hole processing, coating performance is very good. Observations on coating properties and raw cutting results are presented one by one. This article will also present the results of the pilot industrial tests recently completed by a manufacturer that led the European aerospace industry. Data such as cutting force, chip formation and surface roughness will be used to explain the entire dry cutting process.
