ABSTRACT:Love is an immortal theme. View on love is influenced by economy, social system and culture in different historical period. Cultures are always diverse. Different cultures enlighten and accelerate one another from the rich cultural environment. Romeo and Juliet and The Butterfly Lover are two well-known literary creations in the western and Chinese histories. Both are classified as great love tragedies in that their heroes and heroines all first struggled desperately in the conflict between love and feudalism, and at last they coincidentally gave up their youthful lives for love. This paper dwells on the similarities and the dissimilarities of view on love in The Butterfly Lover and Romeo and Juliet, which may reflect the similarities and dissimilarities between Chinese and westerners in their view on love. Actually, all of these similarities and dissimilarities were derived from different culture and social powers of Chinese and western society. It is cherished that such a comparative research will further enhance readers' appreciation as well as the literary status of these two treasures in the world of literature.
