建国４０多年来，我国蒙古族当代小说出现了前所未有的繁荣发展局面，创作队伍日益壮大，形成了一个用蒙汉两种文字创作的多梯队的作家群，老中青几代作家汇合成为颇为可观的当代蒙古族作家群体。按照他们带着自己富有生活气息和民族特色的佳作进入我国蒙古族当代小说创作队伍的时间状况，可以分为老（建国初期）、中（五十年代末或六十年代初）、青（七八十年代）三个梯队。
