Editor’s note This article was written by two students. We published it to encourage the two students to study. They were skeptical about a translation in the textbook, checked several dictionaries, and finally solved their doubts in their hearts. Such seriousness is worth appreciating. However, their final understanding is not entirely correct. The increase does not mean “increase to”. If you want to indicate “increase”, use increase to. Times means multiplied by , which is Chinese “multiplication.” Increase 3times, if literally translated, “increase by 3” is not Chinese customary, because it is mathematically equivalent to Chinese “increasing to 3 times” or “increasing double”, so it is translated. With regard to time, English teachers have another argument: whether increase n times is “increasing n times” or “increasing n - 1 times.” Instances can be found in both perspectives. From the perspective of times =multiplied by, the quantity obtained should include the original quantity, but it is inevitably interpreted as “increased quantity”. Therefore, be careful when reading time. By the way, telling the two authors that the decrease three times means “decrease to 1/3”, or “reduce 2/3”.
