“济南诗派”的提法最早见于清初秀水人朱彝尊论及高出时说:“孩之家本东莱,不袭历下遗派。”概念较为模糊。正式对“济南诗派”概念予以确认的是王士禛,在他为边贡诗集所做序中说:“不佞自束发受书,颇留意乡国文献。以为吾‘济南诗派’,大昌于华泉(边贡)、沧溟(李攀龙)二氏,而筚路蓝缕之功,又以边氏为首庸。”后来他又补充说:“‘历下诗派’始盛于弘正四杰之边尚书华泉,再盛于嘉、隆之李观察沧溟。”可见,赞赏者与批评者都承认,当时确实有一个“济南诗派”的存在。
