The railway that first appeared in India 125 years ago has now become a major lifeline for passenger and freight transport. With a total investment of more than 60 billion rupees and a railway staff of 1.75 million, the railway is the largest enterprise in the country. About 6000 trains a day, the passenger transport capacity exceeds 9 million people (about 1.5% of India’s total population), 5000 daily freight trains and the freight volume is about 670,000 tons. Line mileage more than 60,000 km. To accomplish this major task, almost 3,000 diesel and electric locomotives, 8,300 steam locomotives, 37,000 passenger cars and 400,000 vans are used daily.
