Women are the sensitive ones who are entangled in the contradictions between calmness and radicalness. Frida Kahlo, the most talented female artist in Mexico, is among those who lived in all kinds of extremities. She weaved her artistic net by integrating her tortured private life and the stunning talents. Along with dozens of drawings and studies, Kahlo created almost 200 pieces of works with slyness and mystery. Two-thirds of her paintings are self-portraits which often incorporate symbolic portrayals of physical and psychological wounds. She insisted, "I never painted dreams. I painted my own reality."
Who Is Frida Kahlo?
Frida Kahlo de Rivera (July 6, 1907 – July 13, 1954) was the most well-known Mexican female painter whose life was full of extraordinary experiences. She worked along with her complicated inner world where there came passion and frustration, love and hatred, anger and contradictions and those in turn became high motivations for her nonstop creation and among which the self-portrait could most illustrate her life attitude. Kahlo’s life began and ended in Mexico City where she spent most of her time and that was the reason why her work has been celebrated in Mexico as emblematic of national and indigenous tradition, and by feminists for its uncompromising depiction of the female experience and form.
HER WORKS
Mexican culture and Amerindian cultural tradition are embedded in her works, which has been characterized as naive art or folk art. Her work has also been described as surrealist, and in 1938 Andre Breton, principal initiator of the surrealist movement, described Kahlo’s art as a "ribbon around a bomb".
During her lifetime, Frida created almost 200 paintings, drawings and sketches related to her experiences in life, physical and emotional pain and her turbulent relationship with Diego (a prominent Mexican painter and the husband of Kahlo). The streetcar accident left her crippled physically and her husband crippled her emotionally. These issues are reflected in her works, more than half of which are self-portraits and when asked for the reasons, Kahlo suggested, "I paint myself because I am so often alone and because I am the subject I know best."
Kahlo proved Nietzsche’s philosophy, “Art is the great stimulant of life”. By depicting her own life, the work is remembered for its “pain and passion” and its intensive, vibrant colors. The above is Kahlo, the person who lived between heaven and Hell. May god bless this talented painter and let her peacefully rest in her dreaming world where there is no more pain and misery.
