《红高粱》在西柏林荣获金熊奖不久,即在银川市各影院上映。塞上古城为之轰动,平时略感冷清的影剧院,顿时人潮如涌,盛况空前,晚场甚至出现了等退票的少有现象。几家主要影剧院头几天场场告满。《红高粱》在银川市区上映9天,观众达235,572人次,放映收入117,228.75元。这个数字表明仅有31万城市人口的银川市中有三分之二以上的人看过此片;同时也表明《红高粱》的放映收入与曾风靡一时的、最卖座的《南北少林》、《少林寺》等武打片不相上下。对影片《红高粱》较为卖座,有人很不以为然,称:“此片若不是在国际电影节获得大奖,恐连拷贝费都收不回来”。也有人虽然肯定了《红高粱》的艺术成就,但对《红高粱》是否能真正受到观众欢迎持怀疑态度。也有人认为此片上座是“迎合某些观众的低级趣味,描述了剥人皮、往酒缸里撒尿、男女在高粱地里‘野合’等野蛮、下流、庸俗的场面”。等等。
