The father of probation John Augustus is known as the “father of probation.” Known for his participation in a religious taboo campaign, he often joins Benjamin Cook and others in Boston City Courts to help those who are accused of overtly drinking alcohol and committing other minor crimes. One day in August 1841, Augustus was on the courtside and found an alcoholic who was about to be convicted for a Boston correction. Augustus made a conversation with the man in aid of the alcoholist. He sincerely and steadfastly suggested that Augustus would not drink any more if Augustus would be relieved of his punishment for being sent to correction.
