Baltimore, Maryland Ballast Water Treatment Plant Chesapeake Bay is the busiest estuary in the United States and the world. However, chemical pollution, air pollution, alteration and erosion of landscapes and overfishing of fish and shellfish have put pressure on the bay and its ecological environment. But the biggest problem facing the Gulf is the pollution of the campground, especially nitrogen and phosphorus. Excessive emissions of these nutrients come from farms, pavements, sewage treatment bases and other sources in the Chesapeake Bay Basin, including parts of New York, Pennsylvania, Delaware, West Virginia, Virginia, Maryland and the District of Columbia. Phytosanitary enrichment causes large numbers of algae to grow, affecting water quality and aquatic organism growth, resulting in the Bay being listed as one of the damaged waters by the US Environmental Protection Agency.
