Japan will open up the mobile phone market. After the Japanese government lifted control of the mobile phone market on schedule on April 1, it was expected that it would trigger fierce competition in the market due to being forced to open up the mobile phone technology system of the Motorola company in the United States. Analysts pointed out that one reason why the size of the Japanese mobile phone market is smaller than that of foreign countries is that Japanese mobile phones are expensive. Once the market regulation is cancelled, the price of mobile phones will drop rapidly. Since the North American standard system used by Motorola is technically simpler, price-sensitive consumers may prefer Motorola’s products. The Japanese government has pointed out that Japan’s mobile phone service company has expanded the use of the North American system to enable its service capabilities to reach 450,000 users by 1997, and it also allows North American system users to reach 93% of the users of the Japanese NTT system.
