“五花八门”现在用来比喻事物繁多,变幻莫测。然而在古代“五花八门”却各有所指。五花是:一、金菊花:卖茶花的女人;二、木棉花:上街为人治病的郎中;三、水仙花:酒楼歌女;四、工牛花:挑夫;五、火棘花:玩杂耍的人。八门是:一门巾:算命占卦的人;二门彩:变戏法的人;三门皮:卖草药的人;四门挂:江湖艺人;五门平:说书人;六门团:街头卖唱的人;七门调:搭篷扎纸的人;八门聊:高台唱戏的人。
