工艺美术,也可称为装饰艺术。人对装饰的需要无所不在,但要看作品有没有美化生活的效应。贾母在头上戴一朵红花,可以增加美感;王熙凤给刘姥姥满头插花,却是对她的一种丑化。较之其他艺术,装饰艺术在人们的精神生活中的作用带普遍性。《装饰》杂志召开座谈会探讨有关问题,对一般读者也很有意义。我虽是外行,但也愿意对“装饰”这一概念和实践说点意见。为什么工艺美术也可称为装饰艺术?因为工艺美术作品不能没有装饰性、装饰味或装饰风格。服从社会需要的工艺美术,它的创作过程不能不要求装饰化。但创作设计和产品是否真能美化生活,而且真能提高工艺美术接触者的审美感受能力与艺术趣味,能不能培养人们判断美丑的能力,却要看设计思想所决定的作品,是不是具有较高层次的审美价值。我的意思是说,工艺美术品的装饰化本来应当使它显得更美,但也存在与美化的愿望相对立的丑化效应。怎样才能使工艺美术品真正起着美化生活的积极作用,避免良好的美化要求流于丑化的结果,我相信这也是工艺美术家普遍关心的问题。单就电视广告的装饰性来说,其中既出现了令 Arts and crafts, also known as decorative arts.
