In Orientalist discourse, Chinese men have completely lost their masculinity and have been labeled “male-free.” Neither can they defend themselves nor freely express their feelings and thoughts. The purpose of this dissertation is to demonstrate that the redevelopment of the masculinity of the “Golden Mountain Warrior” by Maxine Kingston has subverted the stereotype of Chinese men under Orientalist discourse and thus helped Chinese-American men to gain the rights to own the United States. Since masculinity varies from country to country and from different cultural backgrounds, this article uses Kam Louie’s theory of “writing and wu” to explain the Chinese masculinity embodied in the book. This masculinity includes both Chinese traditional culture Confucius “benevolence, righteousness, faith ” and other concepts, but without lack of courage, reached “text ”, “Wu ” balance between.
