The authors have reported that non-obese patients with impaired glucose tolerance had significantly elevated plasma insulin levels, triglyceride concentrations, and blood pressure compared with those with normal glucose tolerance. The authors speculate that people with impaired glucose tolerance have an underlying defect in impaired glucose uptake by insulin and hyperinsulinemia; changes in lipid metabolism and blood pressure result from hyperinsulinemia. If this assumption is correct, hyperinsulinism with normal glucose tolerance should also have lipid metabolism and abnormalities in blood pressure regulation. The authors selected 32 out of 247 healthy and well-to-do people
