Different segments of seedings and suckers of Populus tomentosa were propagated using methodsof tissue culture and cuttings. Vegetative propagation abilities of different segments are compared . Thepurposes of this research are to determine whether topophysis exists in seedlings and suckers of Populus tomentosa, and to probe the change in patterns of topophysis. The results show that the callus weights, the differentiationrates of shoots and rooting rates which are major characteristics of expressing propagation abilitiesin tissue culture are apparently different and have an increasing trend with the decrease of the positionsfrom which the explants are taken. The rooting rates of cuttings have the same trend. These results demonstratethat there is topophysis in the seedlings and suckers and that topophysis patterns are the same as thoseof mature trees.
