The decision that led to the commencement of construction of an important subsea tunnel will be some of the major factors in determining the degree of success of the project. This will be particularly true if the geological stockpiles are difficult. Many factors can affect success, including some that appear to be in the first instance beneficial to the landlord. This paper includes some controversial issues from the point of view of tunnel boring machine manufacturers and contractors. The use of subsea tunnels and the types of roadheaders that should be considered as determined by the geological conditions are discussed. Advance drilling was reviewed considering that it is the most reliable method of detecting the complex situation in front of the face. The technical development of a pressure capsule (earth pressure balance) shield is discussed in detail. The contractor’s point of view focuses on the controversial issue of risk sharing. Discussed the type of risk and the appropriate division of these risks as well as the most effective ways to limit and resolve disputes. The author also discusses the contractor’s expectations of the tunnel boring machine supplier before the construction contract was signed and after the TBM was selected.
