Atherosclerosis is the leading cause of death in the world. Vascular smooth muscle cells (VSMCs) play a key role in the pathogenesis of atherosclerosis. Endosialin (CD248) has been identified as an activation marker for stromal cell lines, including tumor-associated pericytes, myofibroblast stroma, and activated VSMCs. Therefore, the researchers hypothesized that endosialin expressed by VSMC may functionally contribute to the pathogenesis of atherosclerosis.
