加拿大煤炭资源95％位于西部的不列颠哥伦比亚、艾伯塔和萨斯喀彻温三个省内,1982年三省煤炭产量达3,930万吨,煤炭出口达1,600万吨。随着产量不断增长,预计1985年出口煤炭3,990万吨,到1990年可达5,330万吨。虽然当前加拿大是世界上用铁道运输系统,把煤炭从矿区运往沿海港口效率最高的国家之一,但随着煤炭运输量要成倍地增长,铁道运输将异常紧张。因此艾伯塔省政府想使用煤炭管道运输方式,来解决西部矿区煤炭的运输问题,并委托加拿大萨斯卡通管道研究中心进行可行性研究。
95% of Canada’s coal resources are located in the three provinces of British Columbia, Alberta, and Saskatchewan in the west. In 1982, coal production reached 39.3 million tons in the three provinces and coal exports reached 16 million tons. As production continues to increase, it is expected that 39.9 million tons of coal will be exported in 1985 and 53.3 million tons by 1990. Although Canada is currently one of the most efficient countries in the world that use railroad transportation systems to transport coal from mining areas to coastal ports, rail transport will be extremely strained as the volume of coal transportation is expected to grow exponentially. Therefore, the Alberta Provincial Government wants to use the coal pipeline transportation method to solve the coal transportation problem in the western mining area and commissioned the Saskatoon Pipeline Research Center of Canada to carry out a feasibility study.
