General railway tunnels can always maintain a suitable temperature, because air can freely circulate from one end to the other. However, the world’s longest submarine tunnel, which crosses the English Channel and connects the tunnels of the United Kingdom and France, faces an unprecedented challenge in keeping underground personnel and equipment cool. The English Harbour Crossing is 32.2 miles (about 52 kilometers) long, and the distance between the train and the tunnel wall is shorter than other tunnels.
