The U.S. Defense Early Warning Satellite (DSPA) is one of the most important space programs the U.S. military has not yet made public. For 30 years, it has quietly kept track of any possible intercontinental ballistic missile attack on the United States on its tracks. In a sense, it avoided the outbreak of nuclear war. The earliest cause of the DSP program was the threat of Soviet SS-9 missiles. Under its surveillance, the Soviet Union eventually abandoned the SS-9 missile. Early DSP satellites using the Schmidt infrared telescope exploration, scanning the ground every 6 points designated locations. By June 30, 1973, a total of 1014 missile launches were detected by the first 4 DSP satellites in orbit.
